What Kind of pictures can i expect?

personality portrait photography

At Stepping Stones Nature School pictures will occur outdoors with nature as the backdrop. My approach to making portraits of children involves having a conversation, learning about their favorite things, and telling some silly jokes.

  • I don’t ask them to say “cheese.”

  • I MAY make fart sounds with my arm.

  • We get organic and natural expressions.

  • Sometimes they giggle. Sometimes they are more serious and reserved. All these expressions are equally beautiful.

ABout Picture Day

When is school picture day?
Wednesday, November 13th and Thursday, November 14th.

What if my kid does not attend school on Wednesdays and Thursdays?
You are welcome to bring your child in at some point during the school day for their photograph.

Do I have to commit to buying something before you take my child’s picture?
Absolutely not. Here’s how it works: I make the pictures, and soon after the proofs become available in an online viewing gallery. You look them over and fall in love, or don’t. If you love them you can purchase a package or products a la carte. If you don’t, no big deal. Promise.

Ugh! My kid has nothing to wear!
I highly doubt that. Children look adorable in whatever they wear. If you really want to memorialize them at this stage of life, let them wear what they love and feel comfortable in. That being said, if you want a more timeless look, you might want to leave the hoodies, flesh-colored shirts, neon, and loud graphic prints at home. Besides that, you’re good to go.

My child makes the weirdest faces for the camera.
My approach to photographing children’s portraits involves having a conversation, learning about their favorite things, and telling some silly jokes. I don’t ask them to “cheese.” This leads to more organic and natural expressions. Sometimes they laugh out loud. Sometimes they are more serious and reserved. All these expressions are equally beautiful. For documentary pictures, sometimes the wierd faces are exactly the point.

Waiting is so hard! When do I get to see my child’s pictures?
You’ll receive a digital link to your photos about 3-4 weeks after picture day.

Is school photography your REAL job?
Not really. Photography is my real job, but school portraits are reserved for 1-2 special schools each year. My real job is documentary family photography, which captures the beauty and chaos of every day family life as it happens. Want to learn more? Click here.

PRODUCTS

The skinny on packages: I’m not big on packages because invariably the items that I truly want are never all in one package.

BUT that’s what schools usually do so I’m offering them with a twist. Because Stepping Stones is a small enough school I CAN do this, and because I’m a big believer in stellar customer service I WANT to do this.

If there is a package you want, but you’d like to swap out a certain print size for an alternate print size, please get in touch and I’ll let you know what is possible and do my best to accommodate your wishlist. No one should be stuck with a bunch of 8x10s/wallets/etc. that they don’t want and will never display.

F.A.Q.

I love these SO much, I want one huge on my wall that will last generations. Is that possible?
Definitely. I’m a full service photographer and for my documentary work I use amazing print labs which create gorgeous pieces on fine art paper using the highest quality inks. The color and detail of these prints are unparalleled. I can then have these mounted, matted or even framed for you. Feel free to reach out for a custom quote if this is something you’re interested in.

I can't decide between two of my child's photos. Can I split a package between images?
Yes, you can mix and match images within an individual student’s gallery to create your package. Photos from different galleries, such as siblings, cannot be put into the same package. However, you can order your other favorite images a la carte.

Those watermarks. They won't be on my prints and digitals, right?
Absolutely not. The images you purchase will be watermark-free.

Is there an advantage to buying the prints if I can just buy a high-resolution file and get prints made myself?
Well, yes and no. If you're a professional photographer with an account at a pro print lab, by all means, print yourself. But I can virtually guarantee that printing your child's portrait at CVS, Target, Shutterfly, or similar lab will yield disappointing results. I work with one of the top professional print labs in the country. The lab uses state-of-the-art printing technology, the best dyes and processes, and the highest-end paper to ensure gorgeous print quality that will look as good in 25 years as it does today.

I have more questions. How do I reach you?
